STEYNING, FINDON + THE SOUTH DOWNS
Ancient barns with the Downs rising right behind them.
The stretch from Pyecombe to Findon is barn heaven, and most of it is only 15 to 30 minutes from Brighton. Expect flint, huge oak frames and views that make the photos.

A listed 15th-century tithe barn beside a manor house, with a rose garden and cottages. They take only around six weekend weddings a year.

01 · THE LEGAL BIT
Most barns here are licensed, but a few aren't, so you'd marry at a register office first or have a celebrant-led ceremony on the day. Each card above says which.
02 · SETTING UP
Many barns include access the day before, or hire for the whole weekend. It changes everything if you're styling the day yourselves.
03 · THE LIGHT
Big doors, a terrace or an outdoor ceremony make a huge difference to your photos. Add festoon lights and candles for the evening, and plan portraits for golden hour.
04 · THE WEATHER
Most barns have a lovely indoor option for the ceremony, but ask where drinks and photos happen if it rains, and whether there's cover for the walk in.
