It’s interesting I never hear this as a reason f It’s interesting I never hear this as a reason for an engagement shoot (read 1st comment for alternative ideas)!

Because there is a difference. It’s a subtle, but profound ripple effect. A shift in dynamics, in trust. I notice it the second I meet the bridal party & parents in the morning. But also when I hear a guest cringe “I think the photographer just took my photo” and another replies along the lines of “Oh she’s so good! Did you see x&x’s engagement photos?” The group then might ask me, “Did you get a good one?!” And if I didn’t or it was a close up of one person, I might enact a joke about not being a very good documentary photographer if they spotted me for a laugh or suggest something fun for them to do - and snap a great one 🔥

Shoulders relax. Smiles come naturally in my direction. Seeing is believing. Guests believe I can take a great photo.

I’ve been called a ray of sunshine more than once, so I know how to warm the coldest of shoulders. But when it’s 100+ people spread across a gorgeous property, it’s no easy feat breaking down those self-conscious barriers we put around ourselves.

The process of gaining trust is a bit slower (and requires a greater leap of faith) when it’s down to the experience and vibe guests witness from me alone.

So when enquiries say they really want candid photographs of guests enjoying themselves and their loved ones to feel comfortable. This is one of my biggest tips to achieve that.

Sure, some couples have friends and family who love the camera and don’t panic when one is around. But I’m not in Kansas (okay, Missouri) anymore. And while Americans often flock to the camera, Brits, well, don’t as much. And perhaps a little part of that is the fact engagements shoots are the norm for American couples. 🤷‍♀️
