One of the best things about a Lewes wedding is that you can do it all on foot: marry at Southover Grange or the castle, wander the twittens for photos, then on to dinner. These are the venues right in town.

Say your vows in the Keep Garden at the top of a Norman castle, with views across Lewes to the Downs. It's open-air and up 125 steps, so it suits smaller, adventurous weddings with the party elsewhere in town.

FIRLE + THE SOUTH DOWNS
Ten minutes from Lewes and it feels like another century.
Firle is the star of the area, with a stately home and a new estate barn under the Downs, and Charleston's famous farmhouse just down the lane. Falmer Court sits between Lewes and Brighton.

A honey-stone country house in its own parkland at the foot of the Downs, home to the Gage family for 500 years. You can marry inside or out, hold a church blessing at St Peter's next door, then dine in the house or a marquee on the lawn.

The Firle Estate's newest wedding venue: a restored barn right under the Firle Bostal, with outdoor ceremonies in the grounds. It's a more relaxed, barn-style way to get the Firle setting.

The Bloomsbury Group's farmhouse, with its painted rooms and walled garden. Weddings take place in the Hay Barn, a big, flexible space on the same site, so the gardens are right there for portraits.

A 13th-century thatched barn once owned by Anne of Cleves and Thomas Cromwell, now beautifully restored and taking weddings since 2022. It's the closest country-estate feel you'll find to Brighton.

Big barns, lakes and a pub on the River Ouse.
North and east of Lewes, the farmland opens out into barns, lakes and riverside meadows. Some of these aren't licensed, so you'd marry at Southover Grange first, which makes for a lovely morning in town.

Big, characterful barns between two lakes, run by the events team at Circa. The Apple Barn is licensed, there's an outdoor ceremony option, and the catering is all handled in-house.

The Cuckmere Valley has quietly become one of the best wedding spots in East Sussex: show gardens with barns, a vineyard, and boutique hotels and inns where everyone can stay.

PUBS, RESTAURANTS + BUDGET-FRIENDLY
Marry at the register office, then straight to the pub.
Some of my favourite Lewes weddings are the simplest: a ceremony at Southover Grange or the castle, a wander through the twittens, then dinner somewhere relaxed in town. None of the pubs and restaurants here can host the legal ceremony, but they're perfect for what comes after. If you'd rather have a big party with your own caterers, the dry-hire spaces at the end give you plenty of room, including a field where everyone can camp for the weekend.

Lewes's independent cinema, with a secluded walled garden, the glass-fronted Gallery and a smaller Studio, all looking onto the terrace. Add the private cocktail bar for the evening.

A PHOTOGRAPHER'S PLANNING TIPS
01 · THE LEGAL BIT
Lots of Lewes couples marry at the register office and celebrate somewhere else. It books up up to three years ahead, and it's closed from March to May 2027 for maintenance.
02 · PHOTOS IN TOWN
The twittens, the castle gateway and Southover Grange gardens are some of my favourite spots for portraits. Twenty minutes between ceremony and reception is plenty.
03 · TRAVEL
Lewes is an hour from London Victoria and 15 minutes from Brighton, so guests can arrive by train and taxis can do the rest.
04 · BONFIRE NIGHT
Lewes Bonfire takes over the whole town on 5 November, with roads closed and trains stopping. Avoid that weekend unless it's part of the plan.
