As a proposal photographer in Sussex, I know all the best places to propose in West Sussex. But for some reason, my clients always seem to book for locations in East Sussex.
That might have a lot to do with the fact I point them to a blog post targeting areas near Brighton. Hopefully that all changes with this blog post and a recent one I wrote about places to propose in East Sussex!
Top 15 Places to Propose in West Sussex
1. Leonardslee Lake and Gardens in Horsham
Leonardslee Gardens is home of Restaurant Interlude, which is a gorgeous fine dining experience. But what makes this an incredible place for proposals is their incredible gardens. The grounds are truly beautiful year round, and in December they host the Illuminated event.

2. Nymans Gardens in Haywards Heath
Nymans Gardens is S-T-U-N-N-I-NG. And to top things off, you can reserve Nymans Gardens Italian Loggia for your proposal. The setting is so intimate and romantic, and their bespoke proposal offering means you can do with the space what you want.
Anything from a chilled bottle of champaign, to a live serenade over a private dinner, or even inviting loads of guests to hide in the bushes and jump out to celebrate the night away. If you’re interested in proposing here, do get in touch so we can make this happen!

3. Goodwood House in Chichester
Goodwood House is luxury at its finest with so much to see and do – there is literally something for everyone! From hotel stays to fine dining, motorsport and horseracing to countryside walks. There is also a health spa, making this location the perfect weekend getaway and proposal hotspot.

An English garden is a beautiful choice for a proposal and West Dean Gardens is one of my favourites. There are so many beautiful spots to choose from for an intimate proposal.
5. Bishop Palace Gardens in Chichester
Chichester Cathedral is home to the beautiful Bishop Palace Gardens and a truly beautiful place to propose. The Cathedral and surrounding gardens are an amazing place to visit.

The rolling downs at West Wittering Beach is the perfect backdrop for a proposal. If you walk along the beach from the car park, you’ll find a gorgeous area to explore away from the crowds.
7. Swanbourne Lake in Arundel
Swanbourne Lake is right by Arundel Castle and has the most gorgeous little row boats. I mean, what’s more romantic than recreating scenes from Disney classics like The Little Mermaid? Proposing here will definitely have your partner at a loss for words.
8. Amberley Castle in Arundel
Amberley Castle is a hotel with a great restaurant and also serves as a wedding venue. This makes an Amberley Castle proposal an incredible choice! The castle is truly stunning and perfect for a romantic weekend getaway.
9. Highdown Gardens in Worthing
Highdown Gardens is a hidden gem just outside of Worthing. From the outside of this walled garden, you’d never guess how expansive and beautiful it is. The gardens are free to enter and are located on a beautiful area of the South Downs – so perfect for a long stroll too.
10. Devil’s Dyke
Devil’s Dyke is perfect for a romantic picnic proposal in the summer. It is the best spot to watch the sunset and is just stunning year round – even in the rain!

11. Worthing Pier in Worthing
Brighton has always been a popular choice for proposals and engagement shoots, but Worthing Pier has always had my heart. It’s very quiet and the architecture of the pier is beautiful. I love how much more intimate couples are without the crowds. There are also some lovely parks and gardens nearby.

12. Ditchling Beacon in Ditchling
Ditchling Beacon is a gorgeous access point to the South Downs. The views are simply stunning and one can never tire of sights. Many couples who get engaged or do engagement shoots here choose this spot because it’s a found place to go for romantic walks. Choosing some place of romantic significance is always a win.

13. Proposal at Cowdray House and Ruins in Midhurst
Cowdray House and nearby ruins is a gorgeous place to explore – and propose! I’d recommend proposing near the ruins as it makes for such a gorgeous backdrop, or the Walled Garden is equally beautiful!

Parham House is breathtaking and they have beautiful gardens to match the stunning house. This place is a lesser known English garden, so perfect for an intimate proposal.
15. Beach Huts in Lancing
Everyone always loves the beach huts in Brighton, but I always recommend the ones in Lancing – especially if you’re looking to propose. The beach huts here are more interesting and prettier. I’d recommend parking next to The Perch, which is a favourite of mine for a drink (their Ultimate Hot Chocolate is simply out of this world and perfect for a cold winter walk!).
16. Littlehampton West Beach
Love beautiful beaches with sandy dunes? Littlehampton West Beach is a true gem and a lot less known than other beaches! Making it perfect for a proposal.
